Real ID bill prompts concerns
Senate Finance Committee members are expressing concern about a bill that would require the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles starting in 2010 to issue driver’s licenses that comply with the federal Real ID Act.
Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, says the bill would create an unfunded mandate that forces DMV to spend as much as $1.5 million of its own money to meet requirements of the federal law.
Finance Co-Chairwoman Bernice Mathews, D-Reno, said that before she takes a vote on SB52, she wants to check if the state can get an exemption from complying with the law.
During a hearing, both liberal and conservative lobbyists condemned the proposal on the grounds it would violate citizens’ right to privacy.

Where in the REAL-ID does it require States to comply? According to Printz v. United States, and New York v. United States, Congress may not “compel” States to legislate or administer any federal program. I don’t see anywhere in the REAL-ID legislation any requirement for States to do anything.

Where is this country going when a man is threatened with the loss of his job because he will not submit to Real ID. My brother losing his job because he doesn’t want his employer to have his credit information (which is good by the way). He told the Nevada DOL that he would not be opposed to a background check but he drew the line at giving them access to his credit information. Now he is being terminated because the Federal government requires people who issue “Real ID’s” to have real ID’s. What kind of a country are we living in!
